Backfeeding a portable generator directly to your home wiring system is not only DANGEROUS, it's a dumb thing to do. You MUST use some form of transfer switch or interlock, along with the proper male inlet for your generator to plug into. A transfer switch/interlock wired into your service panel is the ONLY LEGAL WAY to do this properly, and the only safe way for everyone involved. The transfer switch or interlock effectively and safely turns off the main power supply and turns on the generator power supply.

Plugging your generator into your homes wiring is unsafe and no sane person would argue that. Sure, many people think and say, "Well all you have to do is turn off the main breaker" and your good to go but what if it isn't you? Will your spouse, neighbor, or children remember or have the knowledge of the progression of events needed to have temporary power? You can't fix such a outrageous safety hazard with stickynotes and a promise to be careful. One simple mistake can seriously injure or kill someone, cause a fire or at best, blow up an expensive generator. If you caused someone to become killed or injured, you would be held criminally responsible. Are you prepared to live with that?

If you're seeking to have a convenient way to temporarily hook up a generator to your home I implore you to hire a professional electrician. Reputable electricians are trained for your safety and reliability for power and wiring. Why on Earth wouldn't anybody want that?Arcadia Electrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03541542990236976047noreply@blogger.com0440 N Brevard Ave, Arcadia, FL 34266, USA27.22348 -81.85584127.110514 -82.0172025 27.336446 -81.6944795tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707405457650674886.post-82009464317681208582019-06-26T14:26:00.005-07:002023-09-22T09:26:58.338-07:00Summer Broken

Everyone knows that anything mechanical can and will break at any given time. We also know that summertime is the hot, hot, hottest time of the year. So does it make sense to put off repairing, servicing or replacing that old air conditioner until the hottest days of the year?

What is nice weather for most people is bad weather to us. A/C repair guys hate nice weather. Spring and Fall time weather is when our A/C guys get bored. Obviously the best time for A/C replacement is before the old one dies but the two times of the year where most people are not actively using their heating or cooling units is always the best time of year to have repairs completed and new units installed. The Spring and Fall are also seasons where homeowners will put off maintenance and small repairs until they become bigger problems. As a result, when the A/C breaks, it's a real emergency during the heat of the Summer, the same time of year when A/C service techs are their busiest.

Every A/C company's most busiest time is the first heatwave in the Summer and first cold snap in the Winter. However the "off season" months are brutally slow. So when is the best time to schedule a replacement or service for your A/C? Well, you might get a little more attention to details during slow times. Scheduling will be more flexible in the off seasons too. Not to mention it's a whole lot easier to work in an attic when it's cooler outside. Also the techs won't feel rushed and overworked to complete the A/C service due to their high demand. And best of all, no wait times for you to be squeezed in to an already overflowing schedule.
Although they may look alike, they aren't. High-Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs are a family of lamps that includes mercury, metal halide and high pressure sodium as the most popular. A few other related discharge-type bulbs are also included in this category: low pressure sodium, glow lamps and some pulsed arc bulbs.

HID bulbs produce light from an electrical arc discharge contained in an arc tube inside the bulb itself. The arc tube contains a gas mixture of argon and/or xenon and/or neon depending on the type of HID bulb. There are also metals inside the arc tube. Mercury vapor lamps produce light by exciting mercury atoms. Likewise, high pressure sodium excites sodium atoms. Metal halide, the most common of the HID bulbs, uses sodium and other halide compounds as the basis for exciting atoms to produce light.

Like fluorescent lights, HID also requires ballasts, and they take a few seconds to produce light when first turned on because the ballast needs time to establish the electric arc.

The purpose of the HID ballast is to regulate the voltage and current that are provided to the bulb during startup and under normal operating conditions. Each type of lamp requires a specific set of starting and operating parameters.

It is very important to match bulbs with the proper ballast system. Each lamp has its own requirements. One ballast system will not operate all types of bulbs properly. A ballast cannot be manufactured to match all the requirements. If the bulb requirements are not met (like using a bulb not designed for that ballast) less light output and/or shortened life or other problems could occur.Arcadia Electrichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03541542990236976047noreply@blogger.com0440 N Brevard Ave, Arcadia, FL 34266, USA27.22348 -81.855841-0.80324949999999973 -123.164435 55.2502095 -40.547247tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6707405457650674886.post-68754515671017176762018-08-15T10:54:00.002-07:002023-09-22T09:27:43.621-07:00The Perils of Aluminum
The main issue with the aluminum conductor is that aluminum expands more than copper when heated. When aluminum wiring warms up, it expands more than copper does, and when it cools down, it contracts more than copper does. This expansion and contraction, over time, will allow for loosening at the connections which can lead to arcing at the point of connection.

To make the problem worse, all metals oxidize or corrode in an oxygen environment. Copper oxidation forms as a conductor and when it comes to electricity, a conductor is a good thing. However, aluminum develops as a resistor. This resistance causes heat. Oxidation accelerates when two unlike metals are in contact with each other. This may be part of the source of increased resistance when aluminum wire joins to outlets or switches intended for copper. Eventually the wire may start getting very hot, melt the insulation or fixture it’s attached to, and possibly even cause a fire.

This photo shows what can and will happen when aluminum wiring is connected to a receptacle that is marked "USE COPPER WIRE ONLY FOR ALL CONNECTIONS". This example also shows what is stamped on every receptacle and switch. I'd also like to mention that this particular one was smartly done with easily read markings (even though the warning was ignored by the installer). But beware, not all receptacles are marked as clearly. The information is there but most are stamped so tiny that it's difficult to read.

Again, the problem is with the connections. Aluminum wiring in itself is not dangerous. Aluminum wiring, when properly installed, can be just as safe as copper. But if it has not been installed properly, the connection —where the wires join to the outlets and switches—can present a fire hazard.
Would you trust your home, your investment or someone who isn’t licensed and bonded? Would you give the same trust to anyone with a failing reputation? Of course not. It could result in disaster and you may not have much, if any, recourse. Rather than taking a big loss in repairs or mistakes, check all the credentials and reviews you can on the business before you purchase.

Not all air conditioning & heating contractors are created equal. Some companies are licensed and bonded but are unknowledgeable and haven't taken the time to properly train their staff members to take pride in their work. These companies don't want your business, they just want your money. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, mistakes just happen but sometimes problems occur due to laziness and poor workmanship. I have personally seen HVAC systems installed in such a way that makes it impossible to service properly.

Being uncomfortable in your own home or perpetually annoyed by your HVAC system is bad enough but when you consider the costs of a cheaper, yet poorly installed HVAC system may face in the near future, such as high energy bills, constant breakdowns, premature equipment failure or damages that can occur to your home due to mold or leaking drain lines, it becomes very apparent that it was not a bargain at all. Think about it, a poorly rebuilt automobile doesn't get near as good of gas mileage as a properly rebuilt one even though both seem to run well.

You could buy the best of the best and pay a premium amount of money to have it installed in your home but if it's a second-rate installation, you've wasted your money. Just remember, an air conditioner is only as good as the installation. I guarantee you that a well installed and properly maintained unit of relatively poor quality will work better and last longer than a high-quality, expensive unit that has been poorly installed and not maintained.
The efficiency of air conditioners is often rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) which is defined by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute.
The SEER rating of a air conditioning unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit's SEER rating the more energy efficient it is. In the U.S., the SEER is the ratio of cooling in British Thermal Unit (BTU) to the energy consumed in watt-hours.

Heating and cooling can account for about half of a home’s total utility
bill.* By upgrading to a high-efficiency system, you can cut your
energy costs while keeping your family perfectly comfortable. Use the
calculator below to see how much you could save.

-The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was one of the first buildings to have air conditioning in it.

-The first record of the idea of air conditioning was attributed to British scientist Michael Faraday, who discovered in 1820 that by compressing and liquefying ammonia gas, one could chill an adjacent substance (such as air) when the ammonia was allowed to evaporate, paving the way for the modern air conditioner.

-Herbert Hoover was the first President to enjoy air conditioning. He spent $30,000 to install the system in the oval office, just after the start of the Great Depression.

-Closing air conditioning registers (aka – air vents) in unused portions of the house to save money on electricity is an urban myth. It actually increases utility cost due to the decrease in HVAC system efficiency that it causes, and increases the likelihood of an AC breaking down due to increased pressure on the compressor.

-On the East Coast, summers can be brutal, but did you know that before the advent of air conditioning it was thought that summers were too hot for children to learn effectively, which is why we have “summer break” in our schools?

-The top three energy expenditures in the commercial industry are lighting, commercial heating and commercial air conditioning.

-When AC systems were introduced into the marketplace, they didn’t have SEER ratings, or Energy Star® standards. Since virtually everybody used blocks of ice to keep things cold prior to AC units, they measured the output settings for AC units in ‘Ice Power’ – or how many blocks of ice it would take to produce the same cooling power.

-The Romans were the first civilization to use any kind of air heating system and they also had heated floors in the winter.

-The first modern air conditioning unit was invented in 1902 by Willis Carrier with the intent of keeping temperatures and humidity low for a publishing company in New York, making their paper a more consistent product.

-Ceiling fans are good at making your skin feel cooler, allowing the comfort temperature of a room to be kept higher, but do not aid the air conditioning system at all. As such, turn your fans off when not in a room to decrease your utility bill.

-The film industry releases it’s big pictures in the summer because when air conditioning was a new technology, movie theaters were some of the only places to have them. It became a part of the American culture to go to the movies in the summer, and the summer blockbuster was born.

-A properly maintained air conditioning system will last 10 to 15 years, on average, depending on manufacturer and proper installation.

-A variable speed heat pump can decrease energy costs by as much as 40 percent in the average American home.

-The first air conditioners and refrigerators employed toxic or flammable gases, such as ammonia, methyl chloride, or propane, that could result in fatal accidents when they leaked. Thomas Midgley, Jr. created the first non-flammable, non-toxic chlorofluorocarbon gas, Freon, in 1928.

-You can decrease utility costs by increasing the efficiency of your home; if properly insulated, a home can increase it’s efficiency by over 30 percent.

-Scientists have found that people who live in an air conditioned environment loose some of their natural tolerance for heat.

-The first fully air conditioned home was built in Minneapolis in 1913 by Charles Gates, heir to the barbed wire fortune.

-It is estimated that the amount of energy used just on air conditioning and heating in the United States exceeds the total amount of energy used in the entire continent of Africa.
Sure, the air conditioner may work, but at what cost?

The
job of any air conditioner isn’t to magically produce fresh cool air,
instead it removes the heat from the air inside your home and transfer that heat
outside via the condensing unit.

Look
closely at the above pictured condensing unit. Seems that the lawn
service has cheerfully blasted it full of grass and dirt on this side.
Meanwhile, the dryer vent and been donating enough lint to knit a nice
sweater on the right side. Thereby reducing this air conditioners ability to
remove the heat from your home.

So
to efficiently remove the heat from the air inside your home, it is
extremely important to keep these coils clean. This will also increase
the lifespan of your air conditioner and help lower your power bills.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Some companies will offer to check your air conditioner for a reduced rate as a way of getting in the door. In most cases, the homeowner responds to an advertisement for a free or cheap A/C inspection or tune-up. During that visit, the technician, or to be more accurate, salesman scares the consumer into costly repairs or mold-fighting devices. Others attempt to pressure consumers into buying an entire system. Some dishonest repair people go as far as to disable the unit in order to seal the sale. Be careful with coupons as well. Don't trust them. Chances are they are just trying to hook you.

The cold, hard truth is that nothing in life is free. The real problem is that some homeowners look for the cheapest service around. The cheapest is rarely the best. Quality service work comes with a much higher price tag. If an average homeowner only knew the cost of putting a tech in a truck and sending that tech out on a service call, they would scratch their head over a $29 fee. Believe me– you won’t be writing the check to them for just $29. These lowballers are the ones that you see on NBC’s Dateline.

My advice is to do your homework. Get references. Call family or friends for word-of mouth recommendations. But never, ever accept a "bargain" from a cut-rate
contractor. It will only cost you more.
Flipping a light switch. Plugging in a coffeemaker. Charging a laptop computer. These are second nature for most of us. Electricity makes our lives easier. However, we need to be cautious and keep safety in mind.

Call a qualified electrician or your landlord if you have:
• Frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers
• A tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance
• Discolored or warm wall outlets
• A burning or rubbery smell coming from an appliance
• Flickering or dimming lights
• Sparks from an outlet

Safety Tips

Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician.

When you are buying or remodeling a home, have it inspected by a qualified electrician.

Only plug one heat-producing appliance (such as a coffee maker, toaster, space heater, etc.) into a receptacle outlet at a time.

Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, etc.) should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Extension cords and plug strips should not be used.

Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) are a kind of circuit breaker that shuts off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs. Consider having them installed in your home. Use a qualified electrician.

Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements. All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.

Test AFCIs and GFCIs once a month to make sure they are working properly.

Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets so you don’t have to use extension cords.

Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture. There should be a sticker that indicates the maximum wattage light bulb to use.

Every air conditioning unit includes an air filter that is used to remove particles from the air that can damage the system and pollute the air in your home. The filter both protects the fans and coils from dust and dander build-up that can reduce its efficiency and significantly improves the quality of the air by removing airborne contaminants.

Replacing your air filter regularly is the easiest and least expensive way to reduce the risk of air contamination in your home and may improve your health. As an added benefit, regular filter replacement also prolongs the life of your air conditioner, saving you money over time. Leaving a dirty air filter in place will cause the system to malfunction. Why? Because your air conditioner moves such a tremendous amount of air that eventually it will pull the dust particles completely through a dirty air filter and into your air conditioning system.

Homeowners need to be careful with certain types of expensive filters that are too thick or dense. They have a tendency to actually do more harm than good due to restricted air flow. The same is true with certain pleated air filters. In some cases, heating and cooling systems do not have the ability to move enough air with a pleated filter. As the filter gets dirty it will decrease airflow, causing the load on the blower motor to decrease since it's doing less work. This can easily be demonstrated by covering the intake on a vacuum cleaner with your hand. The motor rpm increases because it's doing less work. Dirty and too restrictive air filters generate a lot of repair work and generally wastes energy.

I recommend to my customers that the best time to replace your air filter or at the very least, check your air filter is when you receive your power bill (once a month). After all, a dirty air filter may be what's driving up your power bill.
An HCFC known as R-22 has been the refrigerant of choice for residential heat pump and air-conditioning systems for more than four decades. Unfortunately for the environment, releases of R-22 that result from system leaks contribute to ozone depletion. In addition, the manufacture of R-22 results in a by-product that contributes significantly to global warming. As the manufacture of R-22 is phased out over the coming years as part of the agreement to end production of HCFC's, manufacturers of residential air conditioning systems are only producing equipment that uses ozone-friendly refrigerants. Chemical manufacturers will be able to continue the production of R-22 until 2020 for use in servicing older equipment.

Consumers should be aware that prices of R-22 has
already increased significantly as supplies and R-22 equipment dwindle.
The phase out period for R-22 means that market conditions may result in
additional price hikes for R-22 refrigerant and R-22 related equipment
parts, mimicking the phase out of R-12 (the refrigerant that was used in
automotive air-conditioning systems)

There is a good chance you've probably heard about the new alternative
refrigerants being used in today's Air Conditioning Systems and Heat
Pumps. These new products have fewer CFC's [chlorofluorocarbons] and are
designed to have less impact on the earth's ozone layer. The type of
refrigerant used today has no bearing on the cooling performance of an
air conditioning unit. In addition, today's air conditioners use much
less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners
made in the mid-1970s. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years
old, you can save significantly on your cooling energy costs by
replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.
The size of the air conditioning unit you need is entirely dependent on your home. The fact is, bigger is not better. An A/C unit that’s too big is a waste of money to purchase, inefficient to operate, and isn’t comfortable. An oversized unit will turn on and off more often, and an undersized one won’t be able to cool your home enough.

Once you figure out how big an A/C unit you need, you’ll want to get the most efficient unit you can. This is measured in something called SEER – Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the unit is. Old units might have a SEER of 5. You want to go as high as you can—16 or 18 is great. A SEER 10 will use half the electricity of a SEER 5 unit, and you’ll pay for the price difference in energy savings in a few years.

Save Energy
There are three major appliances in your home that are on and running all day long; water heaters, refrigerators, and air conditioners. Obviously the more efficient these appliances are, the lower your power bills will be. Air conditioners are one of the biggest consumers of energy, so you want to make sure yours is the most energy-efficient it can be. Even a very efficient air conditioner will perform as badly as an inefficient one if it isn’t installed correctly. Don't be a victim of a poorly installed HVAC system. At Arcadia Electric Company craftsmanship is still alive with professional employees that care about your home, your power bills and your comfort.
